Sail Purchase Window has Opened

The Fleet 1 approved sail purchase window is October 10th to November 30th, 2016. This is your only opportunity to buy new sails until after the 2017 Fleet 1 Championships!

According to the Fleet 1 bylaws:

III.C.4. Sail replacement procedure is as defined in the Class Rules.

III.C.5. The Fleet 1 Board may establish by majority vote a “fall order window” during which time new sails shall be ordered. No replacement sails may ordered at other times of year except as allowed by the Class Rules.

III.C.6. A sail’s age shall be determined by the delivery date as recorded by the W.D. Schock Corp. For replacement sails, the age will be determined by the Measurer’s dated approval.

III.C.7. The Fleet has appointed Elliott/Pattison Sailmakers as its sole permitted sail maker for new mainsails, and Ullman Sails as its sole permitted sail maker for new jibs. No other sail/sail maker combinations will be allowed.

After purchase, the Fleet 1 Measurer will inspect, measure and sign the sail before it may be used.

According to the Class Bylaws:

III.H.8.   For a Class Yacht, the Owner may purchase one jib sail in each calendar year and one main sail in every second calendar year. The calendar year for sail purchase begins on the date the sail was officially measured.

III.H.9.   The Owner of a newly purchased used Class Yacht inherits the sail purchase rights of the previous owner, and may petition the Class Measurer to obtain new sails at the time of purchase.

III.H.10. If a sail is damaged beyond reasonable repair, lost, or for some reason is unusable, the Owner may petition the Class or Fleet Measurer for permission to purchase a replacement sail.

The cost of a new mail sail from Elliott/Pattison Sailmakers is $1,548.  They are offering a 20% discount to Fleet 1 members: $1,238.40.  They can be reached at 949 645-6697. More details can be viewed here.

Ullman Sails is offering the jib sail with 10% discounts available for 100% deposits and 5% discounts available for 50% deposits. Ullman Sails can be reached at 714-432-1860

If you are buying a new Mainsail, consider donating your old one to NHYC for possible use in the Baldwin Cup team races.

Fleet 1 to host the East / West Challenge Regatta

On Friday, September 30th, thirty-two of some of the best Harbor 20 sailors from around the country will converge in Newport Beach for the 2016 East / West Challenge Regatta. Fleet 1 has the honor of hosting this annual event which includes sailors from Annapolis (Fleet 5), Hilton Head (Fleet 3), Charlotte Harbor, FL (Fleet 6), Santa Barbara (Fleet 4) and Newport Beach (Fleet 1).

The weekend starts with a Welcome Reception harbor-side next to Newport Harbor Yacht Club. On Saturday, eight teams representing the “East Coast” will compete against eight teams representing the “West Coast” in a fleet race format (lowest combined score wins) over two days with a total of eight races planned. Dinner Saturday evening at the NHYC will follow the racing on day one. Racing will continue on Sunday and the weekend will culminate with an Awards Dinner at Lido Isle Yacht Club.

The sixteen boats are provided by Fleet 1 members, and each boat will have an “Owner’s Rep” participating as a 3rd crew on each boat. The Owner’s Reps get the opportunity to sail with as many as four different teams, providing assistance crewing or local knowledge advice.  There are several spots still open to participate in the regatta as an “Owner’s Rep”. Contact the Event Chair, Nik Froehlich, to get one of these few remaining spots.

As the host of the event, the Fleet 1 Board of Directors have been busy arranging for boats, organizing the social events and the logistics of the regatta. There is always a need for additional help, even if just for a hour or so with setting up or cleaning up for the Friday or Sunday dinners.  If you can help on Friday evening or Sunday evening, please contact Judy Weightman.

For those that would like to mingle and talk sailing with fellow Harbor 20 sailors from other fleets, tickets can be purchased for any (or all) of the three social events / dinners scheduled for Friday, Saturday & Sunday. Fleet 1 members are encouraged to participate in any way they can, and help the Fleet be a good host to our out-of-town guests.

Here is a schedule of events.

Click here to register as a volunteer, or for any of the social events, or as an Owner’s Rep (while there are still spots available).

FRIDAY FROLIC is back!

Here is the schedule for Friday Frolic for the remaining months of 2016.

Mark these dates on your calendars and plan to participate. For those sailors who sail in the WOW event, race, stay for lunch, and be ready for a Friday Frolic 2pm starting time. Works great!

Heritage Regatta & Summer Party

Sign Up for the 2016 Heritage Regatta and Summer Party!

The Summer Party Regatta (aka Heritage Regatta) is an annual Harbor 20 event open to all Fleet 1 Harbor 20 members, and is a fun-filled afternoon of racing on the harbor, followed by live entertainment, food, drinks, awards and social time for the Fleet.

Saturday, August 20th at Lido Isle Yacht Club.

This is not your ordinary Harbor 20 Regatta. Bring friends, family and pets on your boat (pets not allowed at LIYC, must stay on boat), decorate, and compete in a “not so usual” race format. Bring home the coveted Harbor Heritage Perpetual Trophy, not by necessarily being first across the finish line!

Live Entertainment, Traditional Mexican Tacos, Beer, Wine, Margaritas, all on the beach of LIYC.

And, if you participate in the LIYC Friday Night Racing and Barbecue on Aug. 19th, you are invited to keep your boat on the LIYC docks overnight, ready for the Summer Party on Saturday.

Cost is only $25 per person (kids free). Visit the Official Regatta & Event Notice Board to buy your tickets and to enter your boat.
