Don’t miss this opportunity to see Dave Perry explain the Racing Rules

If you are serious about “Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing”, you either

  1. Have Dave Perry’s books
  2. Need Dave Perry’s books

And, given the opportunity, you should not miss the opportunity to see Dave in person!

While NorthU has a number of instructors, on “rules change” years, Dave tours the country with the NorthU Rules+Tactics seminar, and he kicks off the tour at LIYC next Saturday, January 28, for his only appearance in the greater Los Angeles area this winter or spring.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see the guy who “wrote the book”. If you have seen Dave before, you know what a great experience it is. If you have not, you will!

Member price is for members US Sailing, or members of the event host Lido Isle Yacht Club.

Be Rules Smart in 2017!

The Racing Rules of Sailing change every four years in cadence with the Olympics, and the rules for 2017-2020 took effect on January first. Don’t handicap yourself with an incomplete or incorrect knowledge of the rules!  A unique opportunity exists this month to really learn the rules. On January 14, I will be presenting my “Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing Seminar” at Alamitos Bay Yacht Club. And on January 28, Dave Perry will be hosting a North U. Rules and Tactics Seminar at Lido Isle Yacht Club. People have asked if the material which Dave and I will cover will be the same. While the material is the same, my approach to teaching assumes no prior knowledge, builds from one concept to the next, and covers all the DEFINITIONS necessary to understand all the rules for “WHEN BOATS MEET”. So,  there is a very good chance that if you attend my presentation two weeks before Dave’s, you will likely understand everything he says. Why not start off 2017 with  a better working knowledge of the rules than ever! Skippers, why not send your crews, because two heads are better than one!

2017 Friday Frolic – Important Announcement

Sign up once for the Winter-Spring series and you are good to race on any of the days scheduled.  The series is open to any member of a yacht club.

The starting line will be set up on the bay north of NHYC and the Dick Sweet will be on station as the committee boat.  Races will start at 2pm and no race will start after 4pm.  The courses will be windward/leeward, and the number of laps to be sailed will be announced from the committee boat.

Plan to visit the Pirate’s Den after racing to trade stories and enjoy an adult beverage with your fellow competitors.

Fleet 4 Meeting Minutes 9 December 2016

HARBOR 20 FLEET FOUR

EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING

DECEMBER, 9, 2016

Call to Order: Fred Rice presiding – Morgan Green, Tom Wright, and Geoff Slaff (via phone conference call from Boston) present.

Announcements: Fred notes that 2017 will be a less taxing year for the fleet leadership in that the North/South Regatta will be in Newport, and the East/West Regatta will be in Annapolis, so Santa Barbara will not be hosting an event with other fleets.

Fred reminds the fleet that the deadline for paying the fleet dues is Feb. 1, 2017. Dues of $100 per boat are to be paid directly to Fleet Four Treasurer Geoff Slaff.

Fred is the new Treasurer for the National H20 Association. He reports there was discussion recently on the national association board about holding National Championships in Newport. No decision.

Fleet four Board Nominations: Morgan Green suggested a fleet-wide email to solicit nominations for the 2017 board of directors, as was successfully done last year. The call for nominations will go out in the first week in January. Approved by consensus.

Board Election: Morgan Green Suggested the deadline for board nominations be Jan. 25. An email ballot will be sent out to the fleet membership. Votes are to be returned to Morgan by individual email, and will remain confidential. The voting deadline will be Feb 3. Approved by consensus. The new board will be immediately notified. They will later meet to choose their officers.

Annual meeting/party: The meeting date is TBD.  Fred is to verify with Caroline Kavanagh, who volunteered her house. Tom suggested special thanks at the party for those who organized the Luau.

Adjournment: Next Meeting, TBD.
