9 am Meet at Balboa Yacht Club, downstairs in the Seamanship Center. Sign in, get a badge, pour a cup of coffee, and meet your fellow sailors and the mentors who have volunteered to help you learn to become more competent sailors.
9:20 am Lecture on lots of important basic sailing stuff: Securing you boat; departing the dock safely; Handling the Sails and Tiller; Crew duties and interaction with Skipper; Sail Trim and mainsail and jib sheeting; Turning the boat around marks and obstructions; Stopping/Slowing/maneuvering the boat; Sailing around other boats; Returning to shore under control. Connect with your mentor for the morning
10:30 Go to the docks for an on the dock discussion, then go sailing to practice the items we talked about.
11:45 Lunch on the Deck
12:45 Lecture on performance: sail trim; interaction of skipper and crew for safety and advantage; starting; Learn the Race Course; Competitive advantage—choosing sides of course, staying in good wind, planning ahead, mark rounding for safety and speed; starting; differences in windward and leeward
1:45 Select new mentors. Go sailing and have the mentors help you put all this information into good use. We will have some races if time and skill allows.
3:30 Return to Club for drinks and discussion
4:00 Its’ all over folks. Hope you learned some worthwhile skills. See you on the water.
