  • Your boat has to be in the water continuously from August 1, 2017 until the start of the race.
  • Your boat must have a valid weight certificate issued by the Measurer. You can check to see if your boat has a certificate by going to the membership roster under the “Members” menu on this website, and clicking on your boat name. • Your crew must have crewed for you a minimum of twelve (12) races since the last championship. Also, the crew cannot be a paid-pro or full-time instructor for the past three (3) years.

The winner is declared the Fleet Champion, and may affix a red chevron to his boat’s mainsail under the standard insignia.

I.F.8     To sail in the Fleet Championship, a boat must have one skipper and one crew. The crew for the Fleet Championship Series must be a person who meets the basic principles and intent of the Class Rules (Sections II.A and B), and they must have sailed in at least twelve races with the same skipper during the time period between the last Fleet Championship Series and the Fleet Championship Series under consideration. III.A.1.  Yachts which are in full compliance with both the Harbor 20 Class Association Specifications and Fleet 1 Specifications will be permitted to race in Fleet Races.

The full text of the Fleet ByLaws can be found online here.

From the Class Bylaws:

Schock Corporation (Builder) are implied to be a part of these Rules.

III.C.2    A Class Yacht will be deemed eligible to sail in a Class Race only after having received a weight compliance certificate from the Class Measurer, Fleet or Assistance Measurer.

The full text of the Class ByLaws can be found online here.

It is intended that strict adherence to the rules be maintained. However, a member with special circumstances, may petition the Fleet Board for a variance in these rules. This should be done well in advance of the event.

Flight of the Lasers AND Harbor 20’s – Sunday, July 16

You have probably heard of the annual “Flight of the Lasers”. This year, for the first time, it is the “Flight of the Lasers AND Harbor 20’s”! The Organizing Authority is the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce Commodores Club, and the event is open to all Harbor 20’s that meet the Class rules – you don’t have to be a member of Harbor 20 Fleet 1. No “A,B,C”, just Harbor 20’s. The start will be in the vicinity of “N” mark and the warning signal for H20’s is at 12:30. Trophy presentation will follow racing at Balboa Yacht Club.

Click here for information and registration.

This is a new event, and should be a lot of fun!

Co-existing with charter boats in Fleet 1

Last Thursday evening, several H20’s passed close enough under the bow of a very large charter boat so as to cause them to sound the international danger signal of five short blasts. The privilege we enjoy to race our boats in Newport Harbor is jeopardized by such actions. This has come to a head in the past, causing a charter company to go to the Harbor Patrol, which escalated to the Harbor Commission, which resulted in meetings attended by all the charter companies and yacht clubs. At stake was our privilege. The yacht clubs agreed to work more closely with the charter boats, and race committees are, or should be, in radio contact with charter boats as they approach and cross our racing venues. But there is only so much the race committees can do to help coordinate these activities. Ultimately, it is up to the racers to be respectful of the charter boats right to use the harbor as well. We can take up a very large footprint with 20 or more boats spread out, and without our cooperation, the charter boats would not be able to operate. They do, in fact, have the right-of-way as they are large enough to have restricted maneuverability. As hard as it is to give up an advantage by not passing close to these boats, it is not worth risking the privilege we all enjoy. So, let’s play nice. There are plenty more races…

The Leukemia Cup Regatta

Raise a sail with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS’s) Leukemia Cup Regatta , a thrilling series of sailing events that combines the joy of boating with the important task of raising money to fund life-saving research and patient services to help improve the quality of life of blood cancer patients and their families.

This is a One-Day Fleet 1 High Point Event.

Official Notice Board and Registration

Skippers register their boats and recruit their friends, co-workers and family to help crew and raise funds to participate in the culminating Leukemia Cup Regatta Race Weekend. Sailboat enthusiasts, those who like to watch from shore, and those with a passion for curing cancer are invited to attend the social gatherings and fundraising events prior to race weekend.

  1. Webmaster’s Report: J.J. Jeffries: He did all the corrections and appendices of our fleet bylaws online. Motion approved to take all and place into appendix 6 from the website at another location.  J.J. will talk to Nick regarding why fleet Four notifications don’t go out to all of our fleet members although they do receive Fleet One items.  Also, can we just send and get emails for Fleet Four through the Association website.
  1. Measurer’s Report: No report. Tom Wright absent.
  1. Rules corner. Discussion of Rule 17, overtaking from clear astern involving two boats sailing downwind. If a boat from clear astern becomes overlapped within two of HER hull lengths to leeward of a boat on the same tack, she shall NOT sail above her proper course while they remain on the same tack and overlapped within the two boat lengths of distance. The leeward boat can do a quick double jibe to create a new overlap, and then take the windward boat up, or the leeward boat can veer away more than two boat lengths to leeward, and then return to establish a new overlap and take the windward boat up.

Old Business

  1. Move spinnaker and spinnaker rigging and tack specifications into the Fleet 4 bylaws. Done. See Item 4. above.
  1. Harbor20.org subscription and sign up procedure: See item 4.
  1. Have boats with material changes been weighed? Fred Rice – No. Are waiting for Bill to purchase Fling. Item postponed to next meeting.

New Business

  1. North/South Challenge is in Newport, June 16-18 Fred Rice – Newport is using the lido Yacht Club’s facilities this year. Fleet Four is also invited to sail in their Friday night separate event. Fees are reduced from last year. No big awards dinner, so we can go home earlier. Carpooling is possible. Qualification of participants is up to Fleet Four. Free housing with local hosts is available. Friday is the cocktail party, Saturday is a pre-race meeting with coffee and donuts, lunch boxes will be available for purchase. Party and dinner is Saturday night. Racing again on Sunday. May 13 is the deadline to notify Rich of participation. Fred will coordinate all between Fleet Four and hosts. He will email the fleet to seek participants, answer questions, etc. Fred, and Rich will participate. Bill is a maybe. Sept. 8 and 9 is East/West in Annapolis.
  1. Protest Flags: Rich Miller _ SBYC is getting more serious about protests. Cites a protest in which he participated as arbitrator that the protesting boat did not properly and immediately say “protest” and display a protest flag. The protest was disallowed. Reminds all to get a flag and keep it ready to hang on backstay or shroud. Regarding protest turns: Must be done immediately, not when convenient. West Marine has protest flags with Velcro.
  1. Collapsable boarding ladder: Helene Webb suggested and demonstrated a flexible collapsible boarding ladder she obtained after going overboard in the harbor and finding it hard to re-board.
  1. Backstay turning block: Brian Green – He installed a block at the base of his barney post to lead the backstay adjustment line forward making it easy for a crew to reach. He asked if this is legal, saying it should be allowed since other variations in running rigging, such as different blocks on jib booms have been allowed. Discussion: and noted that rules disallow running the jib downhaul to the cockpit. Request: Brian is to take pictures of his modification and bring it to the next meeting for a vote.

Team Racing:

Teams for the First Wet Wednesday trail run fun race were announced:

Orange: Amigo, Scirocco, Firefly, Fling and maybe Cherry Bomb and Shah.

Green: Cardremian, Pleione, Picante, Sheridan, and maybe Tachyon, and Lisianthus.

Rich Miller: more Discussion of team racing rule: Inside overlap while rounding a mark, the inside boat may “take up” the outside boat after rounding as a team tactic. A right-of-way boat can alter course in a port-starboard approach, but must give the burdened boat time and room to stay clear.
