H20 CLASS CHAMPIONSHIP – Registration fee INCREASES after Monday, February 18

Harbor 20 Sailors,

Tomorrow is the last day to register for the 2019 Harbor 20 Class Championships without incurring a late registration fee. This is an event you do not want to miss as it is unlike any Harbor 20 regatta to date. The regatta will include 3 days of exciting racing with a format that includes a flight selection series followed by a two-day championship series. To complement this racing schedule, Newport Harbor Yacht Club will host 4 days of social events, including a Thursday Welcome Reception, and a Saturday dinner with live music in their beautiful new clubhouse. Regatta information can be found on the Notice Board here.

This is the first Class-wide Championship Regatta that that will rotate annually among the Harbor 20 Fleets across the country; the 2020 Class Championships is set to be hosted by Fleet 5 in Annapolis, Maryland.

We have 25 entries to date and expect as many as 40 boats racing. An accurate count of entries is critical to establish the seeding for the qualifying series, and your early entry is very much appreciated. Entry can be made by filling out the entry form no later than February 18th (tomorrow) to avoid the $40 late fee.

If you have any questions, including entry eligibility requirements, please contact Event Chair John Whitney and/or NHYC Race Director Laurel Dinwiddie.

FRIDAY FROLIC FEBRUARY 22

Posted on behalf of Frolic Meister Phil Ramser:

The date for the next Friday Frolic is February 22, so put it on your calendar and join the fun! Remember, the races start at 2:00 PM off the Race Committee Boat anchored north of Newport Harbor Yacht Club.

The last event held on February 05 was terrific, a sunny and warm winter day, with eleven Harbor 20’s answering the call and no traffic on the bay. Andy Binkerd and Jeff Bates ran the Race Committee with help from Bob McDonald who set the marks. We quickly completed four races and met in the Pirates Den to discuss the day’s event.

John Davies and his wife Sharon raced their recently acquired boat and Terry Drewry sailed with some friends visiting from the East Coast in a rental boat. Pat Scruggs crewed for Terry Duffield and they pushed the front runners , Kurt Weiss and Ed Kimbel, who sailed with their wives as crew.

Truly a great day!

Our next event is February 22. Come and enjoy the day!

Harbor20 Class/Fleet Membership Renewal

Harbor20 Class & Fleet Members,

Membership within the Harbor20 Class Association has been changed in the past year to be an annual membership that begins on Feb 1 each year, and is valid for 1 year.

Each year, all members must renew their membership online on the Harbor20.org website to remain current and be eligible to participate in Class and Fleet events.

In the past, we had a system where the membership would renew on the sign up date, that your membership renewal could be anytime during the year. In 2018, the Board decided to make all memberships renew on February 1st of each year.  That means, there was a period where some members had to pay partial year (pro-rated) memberships to sync up with the Feb 1st renewal.

If you signed up, or renewed your Membership in the last 12 months, you probably paid a pro-rated fee (less than the annual fee), which paid you through Feb 1st, 2019.

If you signed up (or renewed) your Membership in the past month or so, you may have been charged $0 since we had a grace-period enacted for anyone trying to renew early.

Do to the limitations of our online membership subscription system, the Automatic renewal to your credit card was not automatic, meaning, you will be required to log into your account on the Harbor20.org website, go to the Members tab, and Your Account menu item, and then click on the Subscriptions item on the left, to see your current status.  Many of of you may have receive an email notification saying you had to renew with a Pay Here link which you should do ASAP to renew your membership.

I encourage you to go to the website THIS WEEKEND, and log in, go to Your Account menu, and renew your membership.  I will be offering online support for a large portion of the weekend via online Chat on the website to help with any difficulties.

Click here to start. Or go here to sign up with a new Membership if your not given the option to renew.

Friday Frolic Update

Posted on behalf of Frolic Meister Phil Ramser:

Our first Friday Frolic for the New Year was held on January 25. The day was perfect. At 2pm, our usual starting time, we enjoyed the best of Newport Beach weather. Sunny, 70 degrees, blue sky, six to eight knots of breeze out of the South West and no traffic on the bay.

Pat Scruggs was the PRO and he did his usual excellent job of running the races. With help from Ross Stewart and Terry Drury, the race committee provided us with four splendid races. Larry Parker was touring the race course taking pictures which will be published soon, watch for them.

Next month we have two Friday Frolics scheduled, February 08 and February 22. We are scheduled to start the first race at 2pm, north of the Newport Harbor Yacht Club in the anchorage. Mark your calendar and come join the fun!

Class Championship Boats

Harbor 20 Fleet 1 Owner Members:

As you may know, the 2019 Harbor 20 Class Championships, to be hosted by Fleet 1 and the Newport Harbor Yacht Club, is scheduled for March 1 , 2 and 3. Several Class Members from distant Class Fleets will be traveling to participate and are looking for local Harbor 20s to borrow for racing. If you are not planning to race, would you be willing to allow an out-of-town Harbor 20 crew to use yours? The skipper and crew that would be racing your boat must be experienced Harbor 20 sailors that meet Class Association requirements for participation in this regatta. We are currently working out details regarding assisting with written loaner boat agreements, including insurance and fees. If interested, please call me at (949) 945-8389, or send me an email to jwhitney25@gmail.com.

Thank you,

John Whitney
