Sail Purchase Window Has Opened

The Fleet 1 approved sail purchase window is October 13th to December 31st, 2017. This is your only opportunity to buy new sails until after the 2018 Fleet 1 Championships!

According to the Fleet 1 bylaws:

III.C.4. Sail replacement procedure is as defined in the Class Rules.

III.C.5. The Fleet 1 Board may establish by majority vote a “fall order window” during which time new sails shall be ordered. No replacement sails may ordered at other times of year except as allowed by the Class Rules.

III.C.6. A sail’s age shall be determined by the delivery date as recorded by the W.D. Schock Corp. For replacement sails, the age will be determined by the Measurer’s dated approval.

III.C.7. The Fleet has appointed Elliott/Pattison Sailmakers as its sole permitted sail maker for new mainsails, and Ullman Sails as its sole permitted sail maker for new jibs. No other sail/sail maker combinations will be allowed.

After purchase, the Fleet 1 Measurer will inspect, measure and sign the sail before it may be used.

According to the Class Bylaws:

III.H.8.   For a Class Yacht, the Owner may purchase one jib sail in each calendar year and one main sail in every second calendar year. The calendar year for sail purchase begins on the date the sail was officially measured.

III.H.9.   The Owner of a newly purchased used Class Yacht inherits the sail purchase rights of the previous owner, and may petition the Class Measurer to obtain new sails at the time of purchase.

III.H.10. If a sail is damaged beyond reasonable repair, lost, or for some reason is unusable, the Owner may petition the Class or Fleet Measurer for permission to purchase a replacement sail.

The cost of a new mail sail from Elliott/Pattison Sailmakers is $1,528 (lower than last year).  They are offering a 20% discount to Fleet 1 members: $1,222.40.  Call (949) 645-6696 and press 1, or (949) 275-3302 direct. More details can be viewed here.

Ullman Sails has not yet provided their 2017 pricing. Ullman Sails can be reached at 714-432-1860

If you are buying a new Mainsail, consider donating your old one to NHYC for possible use in the Baldwin Cup team races.

Fleet 1 Championships

The Fleet 1 Championships are being held Saturday and Sunday, September 30th and October 1, 2017.

Here are some of the eligibility requirements for those that wish to participate in this two-day, high-point regatta. (Note some of the deadline dates which is only days away)

  • Your boat has to be in the water continuously from August 1, 2017 until the start of the race.
  • Your boat must have a valid weight certificate issued by the Measurer. You can check to see if your boat has a certificate by going to the membership roster under the “Members” menu on this website, and clicking on your boat name. If you have a certificate, you will see it. If you don’t, contact the Fleet 1 Measurer to get a weight certificate for your boat.
  • Skippers must be an equal owner of the boat. That means, the Skipper’s name must be on the boat title as of August 1, 2017. Keep a copy of your boat’s registration in the event the Measurer wants to verify the ownership.
  • All members must be current with their membership dues. You can see when your membership expires by viewing your profile on the Membership Roster on this website.
  • Your crew must have crewed for you a minimum of twelve (12) races since the last championship. Also, the crew cannot be a paid-pro or full-time instructor for the past three (3) years.

These are not all the requirements. Portions of the relevant Bylaws governing the Fleet 1 Championship are reproduced below. Keep in mind the eligibility rules that will be strictly enforced for this special event:

From the Fleet 1 Bylaws:

I.F.7.    The Fleet may hold a Fleet Championship in a location, time(s), and format to be determined by the Fleet. The Fleet Championship will be held in conformance to the Class Rules. The winner is declared the Fleet Champion, and may affix a red chevron to his boat’s mainsail under the standard insignia.

I.F.8     To sail in the Fleet Championship, a boat must have one skipper and one crew. The crew for the Fleet Championship Series must be a person who meets the basic principles and intent of the Class Rules (Sections II.A and B), and they must have sailed in at least twelve races with the same skipper during the time period between the last Fleet Championship Series and the Fleet Championship Series under consideration. Paid professional sailors and full-time sailing coaches must have been retired for at least three full years.

I.F.9     To sail in the Fleet Championship, a boat must have been kept in the water continuously for 60 days prior to Fleet Championships.

I.F.10   Championship races are special events for boat owners. For Fleet Championships, the Helmsman must be an Owner Member who has been a member for over 60 days.

I.G.1.   All Fleet Races are separated into A, B and C divisions. Skippers not assigned to Division A or B are automatically assigned to Division C. The rules for assigning skippers to Fleet Race Divisions are codified in Appendix A.

I.I.1.    A Harbor 20 Class Yacht is defined by the Harbor 20 Class Association Rules, and which is in conformance with these Fleet 1 Rules. Only Class Yachts whose Owner or Skipper Member dues are paid are eligible to race in Fleet 1 Races.

III.A.1.  Yachts which are in full compliance with both the Harbor 20 Class Association Specifications and Fleet 1 Specifications will be permitted to race in Fleet Races.

The full text of the Fleet ByLaws can be found online here.

From the Class Bylaws:

III.A.   Class Yacht

III.A.1.   These Specifications define and control the Class Yacht that is the only boat permitted to race in Class Races. Portions of the design and specifications of the Harbor 20 sailboat, and of the manufacturing techniques and tooling of the W.D. Schock Corporation (Builder) are implied to be a part of these Rules.

III.A.2.   Any changes to the specifications of the Class Yacht must be communicated to the Class Measurer prior to their implementation, and subsequently approved by the Board.

III.B.    Measurement

III.B.1.   The Class Measurer, Fleet Measure or Assistant Measurer may take supplemental measurements sufficient to ensure that the construction of the yacht and the equipment aboard conform to these Rules.

III.B.2.   The Class Measurer, Fleet Measurer or Assistant Measurer shall not measure a yacht, spars, sails, or equipment for which he is an interested party or has a vested interest.

III.B.3.   In the absence of the Class Measurer, Fleet or Assistant Class Measurer, the Class President may serve as Measurer.

III.C.    Registration

III.C.1.   No boat shall be deemed to be a Class Yacht until it has been completed with a building number assigned by the W.D. Schock Corporation and molded into the transom. Any alteration to the hull, keel, rudder or spars may invalidate the yacht.

III.C.2    A Class Yacht will be deemed eligible to sail in a Class Race only after having received a weight compliance certificate from the Class Measurer, Fleet or Assistance Measurer.

The full text of the Class ByLaws can be found online here.

It is intended that strict adherence to the rules be maintained. However, a member with special circumstances, may petition the Fleet Board for a variance in these rules. This should be done well in advance of the event.

It is the responsibility of the competitor to conform with these rules. The Fleet Measurer may perform inspections before or after the race to validate rule conformance. Questions should be directed to the Fleet 1 Measurer.
